Primary Intelligence announces winner of “Scrappers” Scholarship to university student who overcame adversity
DRAPER, Utah (August 15, 2016) – Primary Intelligence announced the winner of its 2016 “Scrappers’” Scholarship, which asked college students from around the country to describe ways in which they have overcome adversity - at significant personal costs and against great odds - in pursuit of their education and career goals.
“The essays were inspiring in terms of the students’ passion for education and learning,” states Connie Schlosberg, Marketing Manager and 2016 Scholarship Committee Chair. “The students described their commitment to overcoming adversity, dealing with a range of obstacles including drug addiction, alcoholism, physical handicaps and health issues. Many were victims of violence, abuse, and ostracism when choosing an alternative path in life. Making a single selection from these extremely moving stories was very difficult.”
After a lengthy review process, including a ratings matrix using five evaluated categories from a detailed rubric, the Primary Intelligence Scholarship Committee selected Matthew Bergrin, a biology major at the University of Phoenix who is expected to graduate in December 2018, as the winner.
Matthew overcame significant personal struggles with addiction and homelessness to become who he is today: a robotics specialist at a biotechnology company in New York. Although Matthew’s current position does not require a college degree, he believes strongly in the power of education and the pursuit of his goals. As Matthew stated in his essay, “I think I owe it to myself, my family, and my employer to get [my college degree].”
Primary Intelligence applauds the work of individuals such as Matthew, who use grit and determination to reach their objectives, never giving up, even in the face of incredible odds. As Matthew summed up in his journey to overcome adversity, “I am an example of hard work and dedication. Nothing in life is too far out of reach. Nobody is too far gone to be helped.”
